About BA Psychology

BA Psychology is a three-year undergraduate programme that introduces students to the scientific study of human mind and behaviour. The curriculum spans biological bases of behaviour, cognitive processes, developmental psychology, social psychology, clinical psychology, counselling and psychometric testing. Psychology is one of the fastest-growing fields in India due to increasing awareness of mental health, making this one of the most in-demand arts degrees.

Who Should Apply

Students from any stream who are interested in understanding human behaviour, mental health, counselling, organisational behaviour and research should apply. The programme suits aspiring clinical psychologists, counsellors, HR professionals, researchers and those who wish to pursue MA or MSc Psychology followed by RCI (Rehabilitation Council of India) recognised clinical training.

What Will You Learn

You will study biological and neurological bases of behaviour, sensation and perception, learning and conditioning, memory and cognition, personality theories, abnormal psychology and psychopathology, developmental psychology across the lifespan, social psychology, organisational psychology, psychological testing and measurement, and an introduction to counselling skills.

Admission Process

Most BA Psychology programmes admit students through CUET for central universities or merit-based selection. Lady Shri Ram College (DU), Fergusson College Pune and Christ University Bangalore are among the most sought-after institutions. Some colleges have English proficiency and aptitude-based shortlisting. Applications open between March and June.

Frequently Asked Questions About BA Psychology

Q. Can I become a clinical psychologist after BA Psychology? BA Psychology is the first step. To practise as a clinical psychologist in India, you need an MA/MSc Psychology followed by an MPhil in Clinical Psychology from an RCI-recognised institution (or the new two-year Professional Psychology Doctorate that is being introduced). RCI registration is mandatory for clinical practice.

Q. Is BA Psychology available in science stream as well? Yes, many universities offer BSc Psychology which has a stronger neuroscience and research methods component. BA Psychology has a broader social science orientation. Both lead to similar postgraduate and career pathways. Your choice depends on whether you prefer a science or humanities orientation.

Q. What is the scope of organisational psychology in India? Organisational or Industrial Psychology is growing rapidly in India as companies invest in employee wellbeing, productivity, talent assessment and leadership development. HR departments, talent management firms and management consultancies hire psychology graduates for people analytics, psychometric assessment design and employee engagement roles.

Q. What entrance exams should I prepare for after BA Psychology? For MA/MSc Psychology, prepare for CUET PG, Delhi University's entrance test, BHU PET, TISS entrance (for Applied Psychology or Social Work) and NIMHANS entrance for clinical specialisation. For organisational roles, CAT/XAT for MBA in HR is also an option.
