About CLAT

CLAT 2027 (Common Law Admission Test) will be conducted by the Consortium of National Law Universities in January 2027 for admission to 5-year integrated BA LLB and 1-year LLM programmes at 25 National Law Universities including NLSIU Bangalore, NALSAR Hyderabad, NLU Delhi, WBNUJS Kolkata, NLU Jodhpur, and RGNUL Patiala. Registration for CLAT 2027 typically opens July 2026. CLAT is the only path to the NLUs — India's most prestigious law schools.

NLU graduates at top NLUs command starting salaries of ₹12–30 LPA at corporate law firms in Mumbai and Delhi. For NE India students, NLU Assam (Guwahati) — National Law University and Judicial Academy Assam — accepts CLAT scores. NLU Delhi has NE regional category seats. Law as a career option in NE India is growing significantly given expanding regulatory, civil, and commercial legal needs.

Eligibility

  • Class 12 passed or appearing from any recognised board
  • Minimum 45% aggregate (40% for SC/ST)
  • No upper age limit for UG CLAT (verify current Consortium prospectus)
  • LLM CLAT: LLB or equivalent with minimum 55% marks (50% for SC/ST)
  • No limit on number of attempts

  • Duration: 2 hours
  • Total questions: 120 | Total marks: 120
  • Negative marking: −0.25 for each incorrect answer

Five Sections (UG)

English Language — 22–26 questions Reading comprehension-based; vocabulary and grammar in context; inference and tone

Current Affairs and General Knowledge — 28–32 questions Legal current affairs, static GK, Supreme Court judgements, important constitutional developments

Legal Reasoning — 28–32 questions Passage-based: a legal principle is given, applied to a factual situation No prior legal knowledge required — all principles are stated in the passage

Logical Reasoning — 22–26 questions Passage-based critical reasoning; argument evaluation; conclusions and assumptions

Quantitative Techniques — 8–12 questions Elementary mathematics up to Class 10; data sufficiency; statistics and graphs
