What Are These Two Schemes?
The Government of Assam, under Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, has launched two complementary monthly financial assistance programmes for students in higher education — the Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Moina Aasoni for girl students and the Mukhya Mantrir Nijut Babu Aasoni for male students. Together, these two schemes form one of the most significant education support initiatives in the history of Assam.
The goal of both schemes is the same — to reduce dropout rates, increase college enrolment, and make sure that financial hardship does not become a barrier to higher education for any student in Assam. The monthly stipend is transferred directly to the student's bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, ensuring it reaches students without any delay or middleman.
Nijut Moina was first launched in 2024 and has been expanded as Nijut Moina 2.0 for the 2025–26 academic year, covering approximately 10 lakh girl students across the state. Nijut Babu was launched in February 2026 as the male counterpart, expected to benefit over 47,000 male students in its first year. Both schemes are implemented by the Higher Education Department of Assam.

Why This Matters for Students Across Assam and North-East India
For families across Assam — whether in Guwahati, Jorhat, Silchar, Tezpur, Dhubri, Goalpara, or in remote districts — these two schemes directly address one of the most common reasons students stop studying after Class 12: the financial burden of college fees, daily expenses, and the pressure to earn early. A monthly stipend deposited straight to a student's bank account means parents and students have one fewer worry during the academic year. For students from other North-East states — from Meghalaya, Manipur, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, and Sikkim — studying at a government college in Assam also makes them eligible, provided they are domiciled residents of the state. If you are eligible, apply through your institution as soon as the forms are available. Do not miss the window.
