NEET UG 2026 Qualifying Score: Cutoff Marks vs 2023, 2024 and 2025

The National Testing Agency declared the NEET UG 2026 result on 16 July 2026. Out of nearly 20 lakh candidates who appeared, 11.21 lakh have qualified. If you are one of them, the number on your scorecard is only half the story. What matters just as much is where that number sits against this year's qualifying cutoff, and how this year's cutoff compares to 2023, 2024 and 2025. Both decide what happens next.

What NTA Announced on 16 July

NEET UG 2026 was not a normal admission cycle. The original exam, held on 3 May 2026 for over 2.27 million candidates, was cancelled on 12 May after NTA found that a guess paper circulating in coaching centres overlapped with the actual question paper in as many as 120 questions. The Supreme Court declined to delay a re-test, and NTA re-conducted the exam on 21 June 2026, widely known as Re-NEET 2026.

The result followed on 16 July 2026:

• Candidates appeared: close to 20 lakh
• Candidates qualified: 11.21 lakh
• Qualifying rate: roughly 56%
• More than 58% of qualified candidates are women

NEET UG 2026 Qualifying Score, Category-Wise

"Qualifying" in NEET is not a fixed pass mark. NTA sets it as a percentile within each category, then publishes the marks range that percentile works out to once every answer sheet is evaluated. For 2026:

• General / EWS: 50th percentile, 213 to 715 marks
• OBC: 40th percentile, 177 to 212 marks
• SC: 40th percentile, 177 to 212 marks
• ST: 40th percentile, 177 to 212 marks
• General-PwBD: 45th percentile, just below the General cutoff
• OBC/SC/ST-PwBD: 40th percentile, close to the OBC/SC/ST band

Out of 720 total marks, the highest score this year was 715. Nobody hit a perfect score in the Re-NEET attempt. Your exact percentile and All India Rank are both printed on your scorecard.

Why This Year's Cutoff Jumped So Much

Compare 213 to last year's General cutoff of 144 and the jump looks alarming. It is not a sign that medical seats got harder to reach. It is a sign the Re-NEET paper was easier than the 2025 paper. When more candidates score higher marks, the mark that corresponds to the 50th percentile rises with them. A higher cutoff this year reflects an easier paper, not fewer seats or a tougher bar to clear.

One number barely moves across all four years: the qualifying rate. It has stayed between 56% and 57% every single year, no matter how the raw cutoff marks swing. NTA calibrates the percentile, not the marks, so roughly the same share of candidates clears the bar every cycle, even in a year as disrupted as this one.

Does a Higher Cutoff Mean Medical Admission Got Easier in 2026?

No, and this is the part students mix up most. Qualifying cutoff and admission cutoff are two different numbers. The qualifying cutoff only decides who is allowed to sit in NEET counselling. The admission cutoff is the actual rank at which a seat is offered, and for government MBBS through the All India Quota, that has stayed in the 600+ marks range for years, regardless of where the qualifying line falls. A General category candidate with 213 marks has qualified for counselling. It does not place them anywhere close to a government MBBS seat.

What You Can Actually Do With a NEET UG 2026 Qualifying Score

A qualifying score opens real doors even when it is nowhere near a government MBBS rank:

1. 1BDS, BAMS, BHMS and BUMS: all accept NEET UG scores at far more accessible cutoffs than MBBS, but seats are allotted the same way MBBS seats are, through state DGME counselling or the relevant central counselling body, not by applying to a college directly.
2. 2BSc Nursing: a more direct route in practice. Many private nursing colleges admit straight against your NEET UG qualifying score, without a centralised seat-matching round.
3. 3Management and NRI quota, correctly understood: these are fee categories, not a side door. Every management and NRI quota seat in MBBS, BDS, BAMS and BHMS is still allotted through the same DGME or MCC counselling and merit list, in dedicated rounds for that quota, at a higher but defined fee. If someone offers to secure one of these seats for you outside counselling in exchange for money, that is not a shortcut. That is fraud.
4. 4State quota counselling: home-state reservation in Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and the rest of the Northeast typically clears at a lower rank than the All India Quota, still through your state's official DGME counselling.
5. 5A repeat attempt in 2027: with this year's cutoff as a benchmark and a full year to prepare, a second attempt is a legitimate option, not a step backward.

The mistake most families make is fixating only on a free government MBBS seat and treating everything else as a failure. A BSc Nursing seat, or a BDS, BAMS or BHMS seat at a private or deemed college through that same official counselling, just at a private-college fee instead of a government one, are both realistic, respectable paths into a medical career for most of the 11.21 lakh candidates who qualified this year.
