NEIGRIHMS MBBS Admission 2026-27: Eligibility, Seats, Fees and How to Apply

NEIGRIHMS Shillong has released its MBBS prospectus for Session 2026-27. Applications open on 27 July 2026 and close on 17 August 2026, for 50 MBBS seats reserved for domicile holders of the eight North Eastern states, selected purely on NEET UG 2026 rank and percentile. This is everything in that prospectus that actually matters, organised so you can find your answer without reading all eight pages yourself.

What NEIGRIHMS Is

The North Eastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences, Shillong, is an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, established in 1987 and dedicated to the memory of Indira Gandhi. It runs undergraduate, postgraduate, nursing and allied health programmes alongside an open-referral hospital. Its MBBS course is recognised by the Medical Council of India and affiliated to North Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Shillong. The course runs 4 years and 6 months, followed by a compulsory one-year rotatory internship, and instruction is entirely in English.

Who Can Apply

Five conditions, all of them, per the prospectus:

1. 1You are a permanent resident or domicile of one of the eight North Eastern states of India, including Sikkim.
2. 2You studied and completed your schooling at an institution located in India, in the two years preceding application.
3. 3You have completed 17 years of age, or will complete it on or before 31 December 2026.
4. 4You passed your 10+2 or equivalent with Physics, Chemistry and Biology (including practicals) plus English, with a minimum of 50% aggregate marks in PCB.
5. 5You appeared in NEET UG 2026 and qualified for MBBS admission.

Candidates who did not qualify in NEET UG 2026 are not considered at all, and their names do not appear on the merit list.

50 Seats, Split Four Ways

• Meghalaya: 14 seats
• Nagaland: 10 seats
• NE Open (all eight North Eastern states including Sikkim): 18 seats
• Common All India basis: 8 seats
• Total: 50 seats

The prospectus notes these numbers can change on directions from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, so treat this as the current matrix, not a permanent one.

Why the 18 NE-Open Seats Are the Ones Most Applicants Compete For

If you are not a Meghalaya or Nagaland domicile holder, the Meghalaya and Nagaland state quotas are not open to you. For an applicant from Assam, Manipur, Tripura, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh or Sikkim, the 18 NE-open seats are effectively the entire competitive pool, selected strictly by NEET UG 2026 score and percentile against every other eligible applicant from all eight states. Meghalaya and Nagaland applicants compete for their own 14 and 10 seats first, and can also be considered under NE-open.

Documents You Will Need

• A recent passport-size photograph
• A Domicile or Permanent Residential Certificate valid for 2026, from the District Commissioner or another authorised government official
• Age proof: your Class 10 or 10+2 certificate, admit card, or birth certificate showing date of birth
• Your Pass Certificate or Provisional Pass Certificate
• A clearly readable 10+2 marksheet
• Your NEET UG 2026 Score Card, showing All India Rank and percentile

How Selection and Counselling Work

Selection for the 18 NE-open seats is based entirely on your NEET UG 2026 score and percentile. There is no separate NEIGRIHMS entrance test and no marks awarded for the counselling process itself; it runs strictly on NEET UG merit.

The list of candidates called for counselling, along with any waiting list, goes up on www.neigrihms.gov.in. NEIGRIHMS does not send individual call letters; checking the website for your own counselling date is your responsibility. At counselling, you must appear in person, at your own cost, with the original copies of every document listed above, and undergo a medical examination by the Institute's Medical Board. A candidate found medically unfit is not admitted. If you fail to attend counselling or the medical examination on your notified date, you forfeit your claim to that seat, and NEIGRIHMS fills it from the waiting list in a second or third round.

What NEIGRIHMS MBBS Actually Costs

First-year fees, exactly as listed in the prospectus:

• Admission Fee: ₹10,000
• University Enrolment & Registration: ₹1,000
• Tuition Fee (annual): ₹3,000
• Library Fee (annual): ₹2,000
• Laboratory Fee (annual): ₹3,000
• Hostel Fee (annual): ₹5,000
• Sports & Games, Magazine, Cultural & Annual Meet, Health Care, Students Body Fees combined: ₹2,600
• Refundable Security Deposit: ₹20,000
• Grand Total: ₹47,600

On top of this, mess fees of ₹10,950 are deposited separately, once at admission and then every quarter through the academic year. The application itself, before any of this, costs ₹500 to process.

The Part Families Should Not Miss: the Bond

Every selected candidate signs a bond on stamp paper at admission. Leave the course without completing it, and the bond amount is ₹10,00,000 (ten lakh rupees). This is not a fee you pay upfront; it is a financial commitment tied to finishing the degree, and it is worth understanding clearly before you accept a seat, not after.

The Full Timeline

• 27 July 2026 (Monday): Prospectus and online application go live on www.neigrihms.gov.in.
• 17 August 2026 (Monday): Last date for submitting the online application.
• 1st Counselling and admission: date to be notified on the Institute website.
• Commencement of the session: date to be notified.

How to Apply, Step by Step

1. 1From 27 July 2026, go to www.neigrihms.gov.in and find the MBBS Course 2026-2027 online application link, marked for domicile of the North Eastern Region only.
2. 2Register on the portal using your email ID, and set a password.
3. 3Log in, go to Apply Services, then View All Available Services.
4. 4Search for MBBS and click Application for MBBS.
5. 5Read every instruction on the form before you start filling it in.
6. 6Submit before 17 August 2026. An incomplete application is summarily rejected, and the prospectus is explicit that no correspondence will be entertained on this point.

What Happens If You Are Found Ineligible

If ineligibility is detected at any stage, before or after admission, your candidature is summarily rejected. If you are found to have furnished false information, or withheld or concealed material information, you are debarred from admission entirely. Check every condition in the eligibility section against your own situation before you pay the ₹500 processing fee.

Rules the Prospectus Wants You to Know Before You Apply

Ragging is banned per Supreme Court direction. A confirmed incident leads to an FIR, suspension or rustication, and a fine of up to ₹10,000; a past ragging incident, if discovered later, can lead to refusal of admission or expulsion. Separately, the prospectus states this in its own warning box, word for word: any attempt by a candidate to influence the selection process, directly or indirectly, will be treated as disqualification. Disputes over counselling and admission fall under the jurisdiction of the Meghalaya High Court, Shillong.
